Neda Zawahri is an associate professor in the department of political science at Cleveland State University.

She will presenting a lecture called "Governing International Freshwater Resources: An Analysis of Treaty Design." The lecture will focus on a recent paper examining the impact of the negotiation contexts on treaty design.

Existing arguments suggest that the diversity of interests in multilateral negotiations produce treaties that are shallow or require minimal amount of cooperation. Using an updated database, Zawahri tests these arguments through a content empirical analysis of bilateral, multilateral, and basin-wide treaties governing bilateral and multilateral basins from 1945 until 2009. While multilateral negotiations can produce shallow cooperation, we discover that they can also provide many opportunities for intense, deep cooperation.

Zawahri received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her research interests include conflict and cooperation between adversaries, international institutions, environmental security, the political economy of developing nations, Middle East politics, and South Asian politics with focus on India and Pakistan.
